Comments from Jon & Kai
Kai: First up, we have Inner Elevator by Aratama. The unique visuals remind me of an anime from the ’90s called Roujin Z or Old Man Z, about a man in a hospital bed. This is loosely telling a story, but it’s more about building a world where there are few borders between man and machine. It seems a little dystopian, as people seem to be neglecting their physical bodies in favor of the virtual, which runs counter to the upbeat music that we hear.
Jon: Aratama is a filmmaker working out of Tokyo, Japan, and I find it really interesting that his background was actually in biosciences and he found his way to creative arts. So there’s a really interesting background and experiences that Aratama is bringing to his work.
What I really took away from this video was a reminder of Heavy Metal. I don’t know why I keep coming back to the Heavy Metal movie from the 1980s, but it really reminded me of that a lot.
And what I also really appreciate in this video is the vibes around it — the music. This is essentially a music video, and the music selection and just the journey through this futuristic space is really enjoyable. I find it relaxing.
“Gen:48 – Fourth Edition”
